At Riverside Primary School, we uphold and promote an understanding of fundamental British values.  Through an inclusive and holistic approach, we ensure that all our children are taught about democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.  Here are some of the ways in which British Values are recognised and promoted at our school:

• The school has 'tolerance' as one of our core STAR values, and discussions and assemblies focus on what tolerance means and how it is shown;
• We actively promote diversity through celebrations of different faiths and cultures in lessons, assemblies through other curriculum experiences;
• Our children experience democracy at work through the working of our School Council, Eco-Warriors and the annual elections by pupils of House Captains. At Riverside we value our pupils’ voices;
• Pupil voice is regularly sought through pupil questionnaires and perception interviews as part of ongoing whole school self-evaluation;
• We explore a wide range of themes that cover tolerance, mutual respect and democracy through lessons such as PSHCE and RE. E-Safety is covered through our computing curriculum and our annual ‘Internet Safety Day’ every February; 
• In October every year we hold a 'Black History week' which affords our pupils an opportunity to explore black history, heritage, culture and achievements;
• In November we support 'Anti-Bullying Week';  this is an opportunity for our pupils to take part in activities that will help to shine a light on the problem of bullying and ways to help resolve the issue;
• Visits from authorities such as the Fire Service and Police are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce the message of the ‘Rule of Law’;
• Our children have the opportunity to analyse events in UK and world history where British values have been tested, such as in World War Two;
• Through our Geography curriculum we take the opportunity to explore other cultures from around the world and we encourage our pupils to see the world from different perspectives;
• Pupils are given the freedom to make personal choices such as the choice of challenge in lessons, the choice to participate in one of our numerous extra-curricular clubs and our bi-annual Enterprise Week in KS2 where children create their own produce to bring to market and choose how the profit is spent.
